Everybody should know that mixing online poker and drinking is a really bad cocktail. However, somehow I seem to be able to forget that every two weeks. Last Monday (being the degenerate I am) I had the brilliant idea to get drunk at home and play little small stakes poker on the internet. So I deposited couple hundred to NoiQ with moneybookers and entered couple 6 max pot limit omaha games. Everything started out fine and I was winning little money in the small stakes.
Looking back now the winning was prolly the worst thing that could have happened, as thanks to the empty bottle laying around my floor I was already feeling rather (over) confident on my poker skills now when I was even winning money I began feeling like the next Phil Ivey. So I told to myself, f it let’s show these idiots how to really play some poker and went to moneybookers and deposited additional 3,000€ to my account. Only problem was there were no bigger pot limit omaha games running at that time of the night so I began looking for some other nice games to gamble in, now even extremely hammered I’m smart enough to stay way from the no limit texas holdem games, but unfortunately there was a 30/60€ fixed limit game running with couple players.
So I sat down in the 30/60€ and began playing by using poker strategy that I like to call the “drunken-monk” what this means that I play aggressively like a drunk person, but I’m also sneaky and mix the aggressiveness with some really passive plays and calls. To be honest, most of the time this strategy fails miserably, but this time I was killing it and had increased my 3,000€ to little over 5,000€ in a matter of around 30 minutes. At this point the person that was losing most of the money to me decided that he had had enough and I was left playing headsup against the other guy. Headsup is by far my favourite poker format so I was happy to play against this person and became even happier when I noticed that he seemed to be somewhat clueless (I think, it is also quite likely that I’m even more clueless than I care to admit).
However unfortunately in game like fixed limit headsup where you are forced to go to the showdown huge % of the time and play aggressively in lot of marginal spots it doesn’t really matter all that much how badly you are playing if you are hitting the right cards at the right time. And this was exactly what happened this time. The person simply couldn’t lose a hand against me, if I had managed to hit a good top-pair he had the top-pair with slightly better kicker, if I had aces he managed to outdraw them and so on.
When I had lost 2,000€ of my 5,000€ I began thinking that maybe I should quit for the night and be happy about the fact that I actually didn’t lose more than couple hundred of my deposit. But no, being drunk the feeling that I’m going to crush this person overcame the somewhat sensible idea of quitting and so during the following 10 minutes I lost additional 2,200€. At this point I had 800€ or so left at the table from 5,000€ that I had had just a while ago and in drunken-rage decided that the best idea was to take my frustration out on the laptop. Thus I placed one careful bunch right in the middle of the screen (or so I thought at a time, looking at the screen now seems like I failed even in that) and that was it for the night.
