Texas Hold’em tournament can be a lot of fun. People who relish this type of cut-throat environment and enjoy competition might find it exhilarating. Tournament play gives persons an opportunity to test and compare their skills with other players. However, in order to be successful, individuals must approach the game in the right way and have a good, basic strategy.

Be Patient: It is important to be patient.  Having the discipline to not play a bad hand just because you are anxious will bid you well throughout the tournament.

Let players hang themselves: While there will be times when you want to force players out of the game, also be sure to let them burn themselves.  There will be people at your table that will beat themselves. Sit back and let them do it.

When necessary, play tight:  Play close to the chest and let players who are playing extremely loose play themselves out of the tournament.

If you are going to take a risk, take it early: There is less at stake when you take early risks.

The blinds are lower which means that you can take chances without losing a lot of money.

Pay Attention to the other players: Whenever possible when you go to a new table, sit out a round and see if you can learn a bit about the other players at the table, their tendencies and style of play.  This can be very beneficial to you later on in the game.

Know that you will have to go all in: In a Texas Hold’em tournament there will be times when you have to go all in. In order to be successful, make sure to have a very strong hand and be aggressive, putting the onus on the other players to force you out. You will want to be pretty confident that you have the best hand in these cases.

Steal blinds when you are able to:  If you are late in the player rotation, then you will have better luck when you try to make a play for blinds. Be aggressive if you see someone that has a low chip stack, force them to make a decision and possibly go all in.

Play tight late: If you have made it to the later rounds and you have a good amount chips then it's okay to play tight.  Be patient, wait until you have a good hand and then do your best to make good decisions based on the situation and what the other players at the table are doing.
