Caribbean Stud is a form of poker that has increased in popularity in recent years. However, it isn’t your traditional poker game, largely because players are competing against the dealer and not each other. There is also more than one way to win and earn cash. Individuals earn money off of their ante bets when they beat the dealer. Individuals also have a chance to play for the bonus (progressive) jackpot.
Each player in a Caribbean Stud poker game is competing against the dealer and not the other players. When play begins, each player will make an ante bet which will be equivalent to the table minimum. For example, if an individual is playing at a $5 table, the ante bet would be $5. Players may also choose to make a side bet. This bet makes the player eligible for the bonus jackpot. Some experts believe that this is a bad bet because in order to win it, a player would have to have a flush or better to qualify to win. The odds of this happening are pretty low. However, it is available for those that wish to make this bet.
Every player then receives 5 cards which are all placed face down. The dealer gets 4 cards, with one face up. Each player will then take a look at their cards and decide whether to fold or call. A call is an additional bet that is double the ante. For example, at a $10 table, the ante would be $10 and the call, $20. After each player has made a decision to either bet or fold, the dealer turns his or her hand over. The dealer needs to have an Ace-King or better to qualify. If he or she does not, each player is paid out even money which is their original ante bet. The second call bet is a push. .
If a player’s hand beats the dealer, they make back their ante bet and the call bet is paid based on the player’s particular hand. A Straight Flush is paid out 50 to 1, Four of a Kind 20 to 1, Full House 7 to 1, Flush 5 to 1, Straight 4 to 1, Three of a Kind 3 to 1, Two Pairs 2 to 1 and One Pair or Less 1 to 1.
Some basic strategy that new players should consider following is that they should always raise with a pair or higher. In addition, they should always fold if they have less than the dealer’s qualifying hand (generally an Ace/King combination). Some additional popular strategy is that a player should always raise if the dealer’s card is between a 2 and a queen and if it matches one of the player’s cards. A player should consider raising if the dealer’s card is an ace or king, especially if they are holding a queen or jack. Finally, if the dealer’s cards do not match any of the player’s cards and a player is holding a queen then they should raise, especially if the dealer’s card is less than the player’s fourth highest card.
