Low stakes Texas Holdem Poker Strategy Against Tight Players

The following strategy is best suited for the low / small stakes games in which you encounter tight players who are not in reality all that good, despite of understanding that playing tight is often the optimal style in poker.

Texas Holdem Poker is a game involving a whole lot of skill and a little bit of luck. If you toss in a pinch of psychology, you’ve got the making for a wicked brew of strategic poker play. This article will focus on all facets of Texas Holdem Poker strategy against tight players, both passive and aggressive.

The first thing to take into account is that most tight poker players are using their own distinct poker strategy, which means they are paying enough attention to their own actions to be read by other players.

Tight players spend their down-time, between those repetitive folds, concentrating on their opponents. This gives you an opportunity to represent yourself in the manner you see fit, knowing they will almost certainly take the bait.

Texas Holdem Poker is not just about the best hand, but rather who everyone thinks has the best hand. You may be holding pocket 7’s, but if you represent pocket A’s in a convincing manner, that might as well be your hand. Keep this in mind as we get down to the business of a Texas Holdem Poker strategy against tight players.

Playing Against Tight/Aggressive Players

The tight/aggressive poker player is the most feared of all competitors on the felt. They are patient, disciplined and calculating. Tight players do not get into a hand very often, folding on average 90% of their hands, but when they do take flight, they become very intimidating.

A tight/aggressive player is not going to bother checking down or calling a typical bet. They prefer to come out betting themselves, or raising an opponent’s previous bet. You’ll meet plenty of aggressive poker players, but when a strategically tight player exhibits this behavior, it’s no laughing matter. They mean business!

A tight/aggressive player is not going to bother getting into a pot unless he truly believes he has it won. They don’t bother bluffing, and if they do it’s so rare that it’s not worth attempting the call. This leaves you two options – wait for a premium starting hand of your own before taking them on, or represent an accomplished draw hand on the turn.

Remember, we talked about representing the best hand earlier in this Texas Holdem poker strategy. The best time to represent is when the flop comes down connected. Tight/aggressive players rarely play draw hands, so chances are they got no help from the flop, outside of pairs or a set. Don’t go wild on the flop – wait to see how he/she reacts. The on the turn, make your move. Tight/aggressives will fold if they believe you’ve hit your draw hand.

You can easily ensnare a tight/aggressive player when you’ve hit a monster hand, preferably the nuts. Simply let them do all the betting, while you do all the calling. Wait for the river to raise/re-raise, as the pot can only grow larger with the same expected outcome – you win!

Playing Against Tight/Passive Players

Tight/passive players are very similar to their aggressive cousins except that you stand to make less money off of them. They still play only the best starting hands, but they come out betting, and toss out even less raises. They are often termed “weak-tight” players because they fail to exploit monster hands.

Tight/passive poker players are afraid of risk, and will often fold to a raise, especially after they’ve checked down the pot. The best way to take down a tight/passive player is to be aggressive. If he checks, raise. If you’ve got a hand and he raises, re-raise.

They are very easy to bluff. Unless they have a monster hand, they will fold to aggression time and again. It’s a great poker strategy against tight/passive players, but as always, don’t bluff too often. Once you get caught bluffing, it loses all effectiveness.
