Richard Ashby may not be amongst the most revered or even well known players in the game of poker, but he has had some success. His tournament earnings are believed to have topped $500,000. He has had an impressive eight WSOP cashes, 5 first place finishes and more than 40 total cashes.
Ashby was born in London and taught the game at a fairly early age by his father. He grew up and played at local casinos while attending college at the University of Cambridge. His first job was not as a professional poker player, that would come later, but as an Options and Futures Market Maker. While working in this capacity, he began to dabble in online poker. He quickly earned the respect of his fellow online poker players. In 2003, he decided to leave the financial world behind and become a professional poker player.
As stated above, Ashby has had eight WSOP cashes. His most notable includes a ninth place finish at the 2007 World Series of Poker (WSOP) $1500 Omaha Hi/Lo Split 8 or Better event.
Some of Ashby’s other notable wins includes a 7th place finish in the Crown Aussie Millions Championship Event 9 Spotlight No Limit Hold’em Championship where he won $139,929. He also performed well at the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Grand Final No Limit Hold’em GUKPT Grand Final. He finished in 9th place in 2008 and won $27,397. In 2005, he also won a nice sum or money in the Grosvenor UK Open Pot Limit Hold’em event. He was able to win the event and take home $37,044.
Currently, Ashy can be found playing at FullTiltPoker.com, the popular poker portal where many professional and very competitive players spend time. Richard is one of the dozens of so called red pros that Full Tilt Poker is currently sponsoring. Those interested in competing against Ashby and testing their poker skills against his can do so at that website. The bad news is that if you want to play against Ashby who is online also known as CHUFTY is that you will have to play high stakes poker. This is because most of the time CHUFTY is playing games such as $200/$400 pot limit Omaha – in these games every player has at least $10,000 in front of them and this might be too much for the amateurs and hobby poker players.
From time to time you can however see some of the poker pros playing way smaller games they usually play (for an example Phil Ivey has been seen playing $0.25/$0.5 no limit holdem) so just keep your eyes open and maybe you will get a chance to play against CHUFTY in your usual online poker game.
Richard Ashby is an up and coming player. He has not been playing professionally for very long. In fact, it was only in 2003, six short years ago, that he dedicated himself to the game full time. Since then, he has had some great finishes in some lower level tournaments but hasn’t yet made his mark at some of the bigger events, with the exception of the Crow Aussie Millions Championship tournament. Subsequently, he has not made himself a ton of money, at least not by the standards of some of the top professional poker players. However, he continues to plug away, competing in smaller events and earning money.
Ashby’s most notable finish to date is 7th place in the Crown Aussie Millions Championship, 2009, Event 9, Spotlight No Limit Hold’em Championship in January 18, 2009, where he won more than $100,000. This finish has begun to put him on people’s radar as a quality poker player. If they hadn’t noticed or respected him before, they may be starting to. Now all that remains to be seen is if Ashby capitalizes on that win and continues to raise his game.
