What to do when not in a poker hand

So many players fail to use the time of which they are not involved in a hand productively and so they are missing out on the chance to be able to absorb information from their opponents while play is still happening in front of them.

Although it could be down to the player being distracted from the game for a split second, so many of the players who fall into this are doing so because they are even unaware that they can get information from players online or they are too lazy to do so.

Being able to draw information from your opponents while you are not active within a hand means that you will be able to read a player better then if you were not to follow their play, meaning that you have a slightly higher chance of making a profit from playing against them, something that any poker player would desire.

So what should you be doing when you are not playing in a hand?

1. Concentrate on how the hand has been played out so far

Being able to look at the betting and play patterns of the hand up until the end of the play is very important, this can create new information in the form of betting patterns of a player.

For example, a player could raise the pot pre flop 3 times the big blind when they are holding a strong hand or they might just call if they are holding a less strong hand.

Getting to know a player and their play means that you will be able to not only steer clear of the dangers that they could be holding within their hand but also that you could counteract their play in order to improve your financial gains.

2. Track the value of the pot

Professional poker players make a good living from the game and with their wages and financial return comes a huge amount of analysation and knowledge.

Knowing the pot size for each betting round before a further bet is placed is something that they constantly look to do, this means that you are able to see the points in which players make a hand.

Should the pot start out at $4 pre flop but then the following betting round draw a further $12, you can pretty much assume that the flop has meant that one or more of the players still involved in the hand has being able to use one of the community cards offered on the flop to increase their hand value.

3. Put your opponents in groups

Now we aren’t saying that you should ask them to move into groups or even ask them where they are based so that you can create a group for them, by this we mean that you need to be able to label a player and their approach to the game.

Is the player aggressive when they are holding a strong hand or constantly throughout the action? Are they subject to calling bets when they have little more than a draw?

There are so many things in which you can group the players around you that you will need to make use of the online notepad feature. This feature is great for players who are looking to turn a profit in poker as their notes will remain on the player for the next time that you clash with them, allowing you to review the notes you made and use them against them once again.

4. Consider how you are playing

Analysis in poker is key and with analysis comes conclusions. This means that you need to be able to consider what your opponents might be thinking about your play.

For example, have you been caught trying to front a hand that you don’t have and so been caught bluffing more than once? If so, the players are very likely to have notes on you either online, offline or within their heads that you are prone to a bluff here and there, increasing the likelihood of them being willing to call your betting.

You need to be able to reverse this information that they hold on you in order to be able to leave them scratching their head about your play, so if you have been caught bluffing a couple of times, it is time to firm up your game and stop bluffing.

5. Try to guess an active players hand

The best test that you can do in order to test the information that you think that you have from another player is to try to place them onto a hand, say it out loud and watch the play unfold.

If you are able to guess the cards that the player is holding from the information that you have on the player, you have a good read on the player and so playing with them should become more profitable but if your way off the mark, you need to look deeper into their game and get more information from them.

6. Make a friend

Okay it could seem to be a strange one for you as the aim is that you will be looking to take all of the players to the cleaners as you look to rid them of their hard earned funds but being strategic in your efforts will help to reduce the raise rate from the players you become friendly with.

Remember that even though you don’t have a chance to win the central pot, you are active within the hand so don’t lose focus.
