Pontoon is most well known as a variation of poker played primarily in Australia. However, this isn’t the only version. The dealer will immediately take a look at his or her cards to determine if he or she has a pontoon. A pontoon is hand made up of an ace and a 10 card. If they have one, they will turn over their cards and collect all bets. If they do not have a pontoon, the game continues. It does not end until a player stands or busts. When either of this occurs, the dealer will wait and turns over his or her cards during the showdown.
As stated above, the rules which govern Pontoon play are very similar to Blackjack. Below, we will first discuss what some of these similarities are followed by a few of the most notable differences.
Pontoon and Blackjack Similarities
Pontoon is an off-shoot of Blackjack. The game is very similar especially as it concerns the basics. Below, we have listed a few of the aspects that both games, Blackjack and Pontoon, share.
a.The Aim is 21: Just as in Blackjack, in a Pontoon game players are trying to draw cards which total 21. The goal is to reach 21 or to get as close to 21 as possible without going over.
b. A Natural is a Natural: A natural, just as in Blackjack is defined as an ace and 10. This hand pays out 2/1. This is the ideal two card hand just as it is in Blackjack.
c. Over 21 Busts: Individuals whose hand totals more then 21, bust. In these instances, they lose their wager. The same rule governs Blackjack play.
Pontoon and Blackjack Differences
Though Pontoon is very similar to Blackjack, the rules are not identical. Below, we will discuss some of the differences between the two games.
a.If an individual has a hand total that is less then 15, they must draw.
b. A player is allowed to split on cards with they have equivalent values.
c. Players do not have the benefit of an insurance option.
d. Dealers are required to draw on a soft 17.
e. A five card trick supersedes any other hand other then Pontoon. It doesn’t matter the hand total.
f. These (5 card tricks) payout the same as a Pontoon, 2/1.
A successful Pontoon strategy will be needed for successful play. Because some of the rules are more involved, a strategy for this game is considered a bit more complex then one utilized in Blackjack. A good strategy, when used correctly can lower ones the house edge to 0.4%, an excellent figure.
Not all Pontoon games use the exact same rules. Though they mostly follow the same, basic rules given above, there are some variations.
