Relevance of Luck in Poker: Article about luck in poker

Its something that we can’t control when it happens but their will be times that poker players will experience streaks of luck that will rescue them from a position that is going to cost them money and instead make the hand profitable for them but what benefits and disadvantages does having Lady Luck on your side present?

All sports and games which can be wagered on offer some kind of luck element, without it you would never be able to place a bet due to the lack of return that your investment would return but rather than look at luck in a wider prospective, lets have a look at it within poker.

Having luck on your side would make you think that your looking to create a profit from your poker session due to uncontrollable factors but the true is that luck can carry negatives too.

If your playing poker at the tables and you are placed into a situation where you require luck to be on your side, you have to realise that getting into this situation is as a result of poor play from yourself, only you can get yourself into the situation where you need the luck factor to lend you a hand.

The main reason that so many players seem to fall lucky within poker is that they have made the wrong play for the cards that they are holding, so it could be that you have not read an opponent correctly or even that your game is beginning to tilt, meaning that your making irrational choices and decisions.

The fact that luck is able to come in and save you from your predicament means that many poker players over look their poor play and instead feel that they were owed that hint of fortune following a string of what they consider to be unlucky hands.

Covering up the flaws within your game play with the realisation that luck has come to the rescue means that you fail to notice that you have a weakness within you approach to the game as a whole, leaving a void for any number of good, strong poker players to exploit.

When I first started playing poker, I had to have being sharing the profits with Lady Luck because she seemed to have my corner almost 70% of the time and with that I didn’t address the faults within my strategy because I was blinded by the fact that I had won the hand, I just didn’t care how, I was happy with seeing the chips being sent over to my end of the table.

It is only when you truly look at what needing luck is all about when you realise that its actually your error that has placed you into the need to call on luck, poor play non the less.

We are all very happy to have her fighting our corner with us when she’s shining on you but when you get on the wrong side of the luck factor you are very happy to kick and scream, spitting our dummy out of the pram that we should be seated in.

I have seen so many players who are taking up the game of poker and their approach to the game is completely wrong, instead of playing a game that has been proven to be more about the skill of the player than the luck of the draw and making it into a game of pure luck, also known as ‘Lucky Man’s Poker’.

This sort of player often loads their real money account with funds that they can’t really afford to lose and then head to the tables to use nothing other than either the raise buttons or worse, the all in button with each hand that they opt to play.

This not only takes the skill out of the game, instead it leaves them in a situation where if they don’t have luck on their side, they are sent away with nothing other than an empty sweet wrapper in their pocket.

All this focus on players having to really read and understand poker strategy really comes into its own here, playing poker at a high and profitable level requires time, dedication, practise and research.

Although time consuming and at points hard to do, the need to progress as a poker player is huge, with so many players opting to take up the game over the last few years and even more expected over the next few years, you really need to be a progressing poker player. Failure to do that will leave you sat at your current level of play while others around you learn the game and then take advantage of you, draining your bankroll and profiting from your lack of poker prowess.

Speaking to a couple of poker players, I asked when they thought that luck became a major factor within a players game and they thought for a few moments and told me that they thought that the element of luck was exercised from the moment that the dealer lays the river card onto the community board.

The fact is that luck comes into play the moment that the player tries to play a hand that they know that they know is not going to be winning the hand at that present time, this means that if your play could leave you within the category of being a ‘fish’, then your prime candidate to be labelled a ‘Luck Man’s Poker’ player.

The basis in which you are supposed to play the game is that you are only to wager on hands that you feel are strong enough to be able to win the central pot, anything else then the idea is that you are meant to fold.

Remember that relying on luck to win hands for you will become a very costly habit as its not going to be on your side every time, and failure to recognise that your poor play has put you into the situation will mean that your not able to improve as a player.
