Easy to Beat Casino Games

Stand-up comics and late-night talk show hosts made a big deal about Donald Trump’s bankruptcy when he announced in 2011 that he’d be running for President of the United States. The joke went something like this: “How could a guy who runs casinos go bankrupt?” The joke is lame, but the implication is spot-on. Casinos are designed to make money. There really aren’t any easy to beat casino games.

No casino will offer a game that doesn’t give them a built-in advantage. That’s a big reason for the regulation of casino gaming all over the world, and a big reason why most states in America don’t allow casino gaming, or only allow it under very specific conditions.

That said, there are some casino games that can be played to your advantage. When you factor in casinos’ cash back deals, free play offers, coupons and promos through mailed advertisements, and all the other comps that regular casino players enjoy, many games exist that offer you some sort of advantage.

Here’s a look at a few casino games that are easier to beat than others. You don’t have to factor in comps to see an advantage at these games.

Video Poker

Like all easy to beat casino games, the trick to beating the casino on their own video poker machines is finding the best pay tables and playing the game with proper strategy. In fact, played properly, video poker offers you a (slight) advantage against the house. There are some pay tables on some video poker machines that return over 100% if you play them right.

To beat video poker, follow these simple rules
1. Always play the maximum number of credits possible. To earn the best bonus on a video poker machine, you draw the highest possible hand on max credits. Not comfortable playing max credits on a given machine? Find a machine with cheaper credits.

2. If the game you’re playing doesn’t offer a double-up feature, look for one that does. Playing the double-up on video poker is like playing the odds in craps: these are the only two bets in a casino that come with absolutely zero house edge. Think risk vs. reward when playing video poker, and the game becomes easy to beat.

3. Do your homework before you hit the casino. Any number of newsletters and blogs report on where the most advantageous video poker machines are. Usually, these newsletters are available by subscription, somewhere around $30 to $40 a year. This makes doing your research a snap. Just read the newsletter and hit the machines that are designated “most generous.”

Craps

Many first-time casino gamblers are afraid of craps because of the variety of bets. A craps table is very intimidating: there are about 40 different bets that you can make. The secret is to avoid the bad bets and stick to those bets that offer the best chance for you to beat the house.

For example, proposition and hardway bets are some of the worst in any casino game. The proposition bet “3, 11, and all “easy” hop bets pays out at 14 to 1, but offers only two ways to win and thirty-four ways to lose. The casino has about a 17% edge on these bets, worse than some penny slot machines. A Hard 4 & 10 bet gives the house a 12% advantage. Avoid these bets to turn craps into an easy to beat game.

Here are some basic craps tips to help you beat the house
1. Play “the dark side.” This means betting “don’t pass” or “don’t come” and backing it up to lay maximum odds. It’s called the dark side because you’re essentially betting counter to all the other players at the table.

2. After the come out roll, the best bet on the table is an odds bet. After the point comes out, you’re allowed to place an additional bet as a multiple of your pass line. A 2x multiple is standard, though some casinos go as high as 100x.

Since the odds bet pays out at true odds, the house essentially has a 0 edge on the odds bet. Combine that with the skinny house edge of 1.41% on the come out roll, and you shrink the house’s edge even further. For example, if you take a 2x multiplier, the house edge becomes 0.61% instead of 1.41%. That’s close to even money.

3. Use Place/Buy bets to your advantage. The most common number in craps is 7, with six ways for the dice to come up 7. The next most common numbers are 6 and 8, each with five possible dice combinations. That makes your odds 6-5 against a house edge of just 1.52 percent. That’s much better than most other bets in the casino.

Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the few casino games that can be beat with strategy. Knowing the rules of the particular blackjack game you’re playing and understanding the “best play” for every hand means you can actually expect a positive return over time. Of course, that kind of expectation requires perfect strategy every hand.

Even without a perfect understanding of blackjack strategy, a player who truly understands the regulations of a given blackjack table stands to win a decent return in the short-term. Of course, if you spend a little time learning blackjack strategy you can shrink the average blackjack house edge from around 8% (depending on the table rules) to around 0.5%.

Here are three tips to help you play blackjack profitably, and turn it into an easy to beat casino game
1. Buy (and memorize) a blackjack strategy chart. Casinos sell these charts in the gift shop, and there’s no casino on Earth that won’t allow you to look at a strategy chart while you play. There’s no shame in using a strategy chart, especially early in your blackjack career before you learn the ropes. This chart gives you the best plays based on your hand and the dealer’s up-card.

2. Never take insurance. Unless you’re a card-counter (and if you are, why are you reading this article?) taking insurance is a losing proposition. Don’t think about it as “taking insurance,” think of it as a side bet that the dealer either does or doesn’t have a blackjack. Like most side action, insurance is a sucker bet.

3. Use bankroll management techniques to minimize losses. This can be as simple as setting a “loss limit” or “win limit” for yourself, or more complicated. Some blackjack players won’t sit at a table that requires a bet larger than five percent of their total bankroll. No matter your method, bankroll management is the best way to protect yourself from losing big at the blackjack table.
